STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team sent two balls deep over the fence on Friday afternoon, but the four RBI's would fall just short for the victory over the host Buena Vista University Beavers by a 4-5 final score. The Spartans scored four runs off seven hits as BVU scored five runs off 12 hits and both squads played errorless ball.
UD used a leadoff walk to
Parker Allen in the first at bat of the game to their benefit. A fielder's choice to
Jake Cekander would put him on first base after an Allen out at second by the second baseman unassisted.
Mitch Pomeroy homered to left-center for the two RBI's. UD held the lead through four innings by a 2-1 margin.
BVU took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth after a two run outing. The Beavers added another run in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-2 lead. The Spartans responded in the top of the eighth with another long ball.
Max Snowden led off the inning with a single to right field. The next at bat,
Parker Allen crushed a hit over the left field fence for the two RBI rally. UD ended the inning with three straight ground outs with the game knotted at 4-4. BV would hit a deep ball over the left field fence in the bottom of the eighth to re-take the lead 5-4. In the top of the ninth, UD earned a walk to a runner on base, only to have him picked off by the catcher to first base. Two fly outs would end the game.
