DUBUQUE, Iowa - On a day where the weather was sunny and warm for the first time this season, the University of Dubuque baseball team would suffer two losses this afternoon as they fell to the Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) Prairiewolves in American Rivers Conference play by final scores of 0-1 in 11 innings and 4-6 in seven innings. The Spartans celebrated Senior Day this afternoon as 12 members of the Spartans baseball team was recognized for their hard work not only on the team, but in the classroom as well. The Spartans now sit at 18-14 with a 10-10 record in A-R-C competition.
Game 1
Game one would be a pitching duel as both starters went 7+ innings of not giving up a single run. It wasn't until the 11th inning where NWU was able to scratch a run across the plate off an RBI single and then held the Spartans scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the 1-0 win in game one.
Edward Rosas gave the Spartans quality innings as he pitched eight allowing only two hits and striking out seven.
Derek Hardin took the loss in three innings pitched giving up the lone run. The Spartans had their opportunities as they left 13 on base and unable to bring in a single run.
Game 2
Due to game one going to extra innings, game two was played through seven innings according to the conference rules. Game two would be a much different game than game one as NWU scored two runs in the top of the first inning, already doubling their total from game one. The Spartans also broke their drought in the first inning scoring a run after
Colton Pfeifer reached on a fielder;s choice and
Kellen Mitchell was able to score. NWU would continue to have the hit bat, as they built a 6-1 lead through four innings.
The Spartans would try to close the gap getting the NWU lead down to 6-4 in the sixth inning before NWU closed out the game and swept the Saturday doubleheader.
Joe Unger,
Hunter Martindale, and
Mitch Pomeroy led the Spartans batting as they all went 2-3 (.667).
Jake Cekander got the start on the mound as be earned the loss after giving up six runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.
Shaun Logan closed out the game with 3.1 innings of two hits and zero runs.

The Spartans will finish the conference regular season with a three game series against the Buena Vista University Beavers with a Friday, April 29 doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. and then finishing on Saturday, April 30 with one game starting at 1:00 p.m.
