DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team headed downtown to Petrakis Park where they took on their cross-town rivals, the Loras College Duahwks in a American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) showdown for a Tuesday night doubleheader. In the previous meeting a week ago on their home field, the Spartans captured a 7-1 victory to open up series play. Fast forward to tonight, the Duhawks would edge the Spartans in a close game 7-6 despite being outhit by the Spartans. Game two would be in favor of the Spartans as they took down the Duhawks in seven innings 12-1. With the game two victory, the Spartans took the series win over the Duhawks winning two out of three and move to 18-12 on the season and post a 10-8 record in A-R-C play which sits fifth in the conference standings.
Game 1
The Duahwks struck first with a first inning single, before a
Mitch Pomeroy homerun to left field knotted the game at 1-1. Loras responded with a homerun in the bottom of the inning and would ultimately lead 3-1 after two innings. The fifth inning the Spartans found a spark to retake the lead after an RBI groundout by
Hayden Iacolucci and a
Mitch Pomeroy double down the right field line to give the Spartans a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Loras fought back to regain the lead at 5-4 before two solo shots in the top of the seventh inning by
Max Snowden and
Cole DeStefanis gave the Spartans the lead back 6-5. Loras would answer yet again in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run single that would ultimately be the winning runs for the Duhawks to take game one 7-6.
Aiden Sullivan got the start for the Spartans going 4.1 innings giving up four runs on eight hits.
Noah Zoglman finished the last two innings for the Spartans giving up two runs on two hits in which he earned the loss.
Game 2
Barrett Bell got the nod from coach in game two as he pitched five solid innings allowing no runs and giving up only two hits earning him the win. He also struck out four of the 17 batters he faced. Bell had help from his teammates on the offensive side of the ball as the Spartans built a 7-0 lead through five innings. The Duhawks managed a run in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Spartans tacked on five more runs in the seventh inning to secure the 12-1 seven inning game. As if
Mitch Pomeroy couldn't top his game one performance, he did in game two as he went 4-5 with a single, two doubles, and a triple. Pomeroy nearly completed the rare cycle, with needing a homerun to complete it. Aiden Elfering came in for relief for the Spartans closing out the final two innings giving up one earned run on two hits.

The Spartans will suit up this Friday, April 22 as they take on Nebraska Wesleyan University at 3:00 p.m. in game one of a three game series at Dan W. Runkle Field.
