Baseball Lose in Extra Innings

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team would strand nine runners on base in an extra inning loss on Friday afternoon to the Luther College Norse in 11 innings 1-3.

The Spartans looked to be in a good place in the bottom of the ninth with one out and two runners on base, including one at third base. Unfortunately timely hits for the Spartans, went missing in the loss with UD striking out 10 times. The Spartans would strike out looking six times in the 10th and 11th innings. The Norse connected on a two run home in the top of the 11th breaking a 1-1 tie.

UD finished the afternoon with one run off 11 hits and committed three errors, Luther scored three runs off six hits and committed one error. Solid pitching for the Spartans allowed just one earned run. Aiden Sullivan started the game and would go six innings, gave up just three hits and no earned run and fanned seven Norse batters. Derek Hardin came in for relief and tossed the final five innings and allowed the one earned run and struck out two.

Before today's game, UD took a few minutes to welcome Theo McWhite  to honor his son, Austin McWhite, a former UD Spartan baseball student-athlete, class of 2017. Austin was a tremendous young man, taken away too soon in a tragic motorcycle accident in July of 2018 near the base where he was stationed at in Fort Campbell, Ky. On the baseball field, he was a two-time All-Conference outfielder who roamed center field with great abandon. Offensively he finished his career at UD 2ndin career doubles, 2nd in career total bases, and 3rd in career runs scored. He was a U.S. ARMY ROTC Cadet and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 in aviation. The family of Austin McWhite set up an Austin McWhite Foundation to honor their son and reward UD aviation majors with a scholarship on behalf and in remembrance of their son. Earning the scholarship were three seniors: Shaun Logan, Hunter Martindale, and Kellen Mitchell.

The two schools continue the action on Sunday, April 3 beginning at 12 p.m. on Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field. Originally scheduled for Saturday, April 2, the doubleheader has been moved back a day due to the inclement weather anticipated for the Dubuque area on Saturday.
