Baseball Lose Home Opener to Marian

Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team didn't have the result they were hoping for in their chilly home opener on Saturday after suffering an 3-8 loss. Originally slated for a doubleheader, but the amount of rain on Friday would push back the start to 3 p.m. and UD would host Marian University for just one nine inning contest. The two teams will continue play on Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field.

The Spartans finished the afternoon with three runs off 11 hits and committed one error in the loss. Marian finished the day with eight runs off 12 hits and played errorless. The two squads would each leave six runners on base.

Jake Sekander led the Spartans offense after going 3-4 at the plate. Colton Pfiefer and Kellen Mitchell would both finish with two hits. Lead-off Parker Allen earned an RBI in the third inning, Hunter Martindale pitch hitting in the seventh would collect an RBI on a fielder's choice, and Cole DeStefanis would sac fly in the eighth for the Spartans third RBI. Sekander and Mitchell would both finish with a double.

Aiden Sullivan took the loss for UD, he would allow six earned runs in 4.1 innings of work while striking out three. Anthony Scanlon tossed the final 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run while striking out five. The Spartans allowed six doubles and two homeruns on the day.

Warmer weather is expected for Sunday's doubleheader which will begin at noon at Dan. W. Runkle Field.
