DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team enjoyed a warm and sunny Sunday as they hosted the Marian University Sabers slated for a doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled to be played on the road at Marian University, but due to melting and rain in previous days, their field was deemed unplayable. After having lost to Marian on Saturday, the Spartans would collect two victories against the Sabers with a 9-7 win in game one and a 3-2 victory in walk-off fashion to conclude the three-game series.
Game 1
The Spartans went with
Edward Rosas on the mound for the Spartans and he would go six innings giving up two hits and three runs and striking out four.
Derek Hardin got the win with 2.2 innings on the mound and allowing only two hits. The Spartans opened up a big lead on the Sabers 6-1 through the fifth inning. The Sabers answered in the seventh with six runs in the inning to take the lead 7-6.
Joe Unger went 3-3 at the plate where he would knock in three runs including the game winning run in the seventh inning which gave the Spartans a 9-7 advantage before Derek hardin closed out the game to secure the game one victory. The Spartans collected 11 hits throughout the contest and left eight runners on base. The Sabers had seven hits and seven runners were left on base.
Game 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, runs were hard to come by.
Mitch Pomeroy tripled in the first inning to score the first run of the game and
Kellen Mitchell followed suit with a a sac fly to right field to score Pomeroy to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. The Sabers tacked on a run in the fourth inning and in the ninth with two strikes, and two outs to force the Spartans to have to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning knotted at 2-2.
Kellen Mitchell led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field. He would then be replaced by Qunicy Bryant to pinch run. A
Colton Pfeifer ground ball turned into a fielder's choice as Bryant would be out on the play.
Kyle Radi would then double to right field to move Pfeifer to third base and Radi stood at second. Senior
Max Snowden then hit a shot up the middle for a single to bring in the winning run in walk-off fashion for the Spartans 3-2.
The Spartans had six hits in the game with three of them coming in the ninth inning.
Kyle Radi went 2-3 with the big double coming in the ninth to set up the winning run.
Aidan Elfering got the start pitching a great five innings allowing four hits and one run.
Jake Cekander came in for relief in the final four innings and allowed four hits and one run to give him the win.

The baseball team is back at Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field next Friday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. against the Simpson College Storm. They will them face the Storm again in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 starting at 1:00 p.m.
