Softball Takes Two at Rockford, Collect 10th Win

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The University of Dubuque softball team captured their 10th win of the season when they swept Rockford University on Thursday evening. UD won game one by a score of 8-4 and played extra innings in game two before collecting the win in the eighth by a 4-2 margin.

The Spartans would fight back in both games after trailing early. UD was down 0-3 in game one, but scored in five out of six final innings to rally. In game two, UD trailed 0-3 through six innings before the Spartans added one earned and one unearned run in the top of the seventh to knot the game at 2-2. UD took their first lead in the top of the eighth after scoring two runs with one out for the eventual game winner.

UD scored eight runs with 13 hits and committed four errors in the opener. Kayla Breunig earned the win on the mound after allowing just one earned run, striking out four and walking four to earn her fifth win of the season. Lauren Brown homered in the second with Dariann Diorio on for two RBI's, Brown went 3-3 at the plate. Deanna Origer tripled in the third collecting two RBi's. Alyanna Martinez went 3-5 with an RBI and scored twice.

In the night cap, the Spartans scored four runs in nine hits and played errorless. Starting pitcher Madeleine Belluomini went five innings allowed two earned runs before Megan Wolff came in for relief the final three innings to collect the win, her fourth of the season. She faced 13 batters, struck out four after giving up four hits and holds the team's low ERA of 1.40. Dariann Diorio had the games only triple and went 2-4.

The Spartans will enjoy a few days off before they begin American Rivers Conference play at Wartburg in a doubleheader on March 26.
