Baseball Splits at Millikin

MILLIKIN, Ill. - The University of Dubuque baseball team would split the doubleheader at Millikin University on Sunday. The Spartans lost game one by an 3-8 margin, but rallied to capture game two 13-9.

Anthony Scanlon got the starting nod in game one and would toss three innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Aidan Elfering came in for relief and allowed two earned run in five hits to take the loss after throwing four innings. Ben Kettering and Seth Crandall threw the eighth and combined to allow four hits and three earned runs. Mitch Pomeroy kept his hot hitting from spring break and went 3-4 at the plate with teo runs scored. Six other Spartans would all collect a hit as UD scored three runs off nine hits and had one error in the loss.

In game two, UD jumped out quickly and put three runs in the opening inning. Parker Allen struck out swinging. Jake Cekander singled up the middle. Pomeroy singled to right field; Cekander advanced to second. Hunter Martindale reached on a throwing error by p, and advanced to second; Pomeroy advanced to third; Cekander scoredon the play. Colton Pfeifer doubled down the lf line, RBI; Martindale scored, unearned; and Pomeroy scored. Jordan Goldstein fouled out to 1b. Hayden Iacolucci was out at first p to ss to 1b. The Spartans scored 3 runs, 3 hits, 1 error, 1 LOB.

The Spartans offense would score three more run in the third, five runs in the top of the fourth to extend their early lead to 11-1 before Millikin scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to slice into the Spartans lead 11-4. Millkin held the Spartans out of the scoring column in the fifth and continued to slice into the lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. UD responded by scoring twice in the top of the sixth to extend the lead 13-7. Millikin would add two more runs in the eighth and the Spartans shut them down in the final inning to claim the victory 13-9.

Pomeroy was 3-6 at the plate with three runs scored. Colton Pfeifer finished game two with three RBI's after a 4-5 outing and had the Spartans lone triple. Hayden Iacolucci finished with two RBI's was was 3-5 at the plate.Joe Unger went 2-5 with two RBI's and teammate Brandon Watkins was 2-4 with two RBI's. The Spartans scored 13 runs in 18 hits and played errorless. Nine Spartans were left on base and UD turned one double play. Shaun Logan started on the mound and went four innings, struck out four and allowed seven earned runs. Aiden Sullivan came in for relief and tossed four innings and allowed two earned runs to collect the win. Edward Rosas threw the final inning and was able to have the leadoff pop up to rightfield. The second at bat was another out to right field. He allowed one hit to left field with two outs and fanned the final at bat to end the game.

The Spartans (6-3) will host Marian University on Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m. on the Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field with game two starting at approximately 3 p.m.
