DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team expected to have a busy two-game weekend of play. Friday night, UD traveled to face the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), the game would be rescheduled after no officials showed up. The Spartans returned home to host the University of Northwestern Eagles on Saturday afternoon and would battle from behind a better part of the contest, but captured the game by a slim 59-53 margin.
The Spartans leading scorer just happened to be celebrating her 20th birthday and
Morgan Hawkins would finish the day with a team high 22 points, 14 rebounds, and six steals.
Kathleen Mathias would fall just shy of a double-double after scoring 11 points, nine rebounds, and dished out five assists.
Tabria Thomas added nine points and eight rebounds.
UD overcame 24 turnovers and led for just 13:04 of the game. The visiting Eagles would convert those Spartans miscues into 24 points and score 26 points in the paint. UD made 22-55 attempts in the game (40%), 3-14 from the three point area (21.4%), and sank 12-19 free throws (63.2%). The Spartans out rebounded the guests 48-34 and held them to 31.3% shooting from the field.
UD will enjoy a Christmas break and will return to the friendly confines of Stoltz Sports Center on December 29 when they will host Rockford University. A make-up game versus MSOE is tentatively being re-scheduled on Dec. 30. in Dubuque.
