Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Spartans Rivalry With Duhawks Ends in Scoreless Draw

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team fought hard for 90 minutes against the Loras College Duhawks, but neither team was able to score offensively to end the cross-town rivalry game in a scoreless draw.

When the Spartans and Duhawks meet up, the fans can always expect a close battle of two tough teams. The last time these two teams met was last year's American Rivers Conference Championship game where the Spartans were defeated by the Duhawks 1-0 at Oyen Field. The Spartans were looking to change that script on Tuesday night, but were held to limited scoring chances in the game, resulting in the draw.

The Spartans defense would be the primary focus in the opening half as they battled through 10 Duhawk shots and eight corner kicks. The Spartans offense was held to only three shot opportunities and had no corner kick opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. After the half, the Spartans were able to churn some offensive momentum as they doubled their shots in the second half from the previous with six to go along with seven corner kicks. The fouls were about even on both sides as the Duhawks had 14 whereas the Spartans had 13.

Gavin Wooldridge led the Spartans with four shots, but none were on target. Lucas Von Braun and Carson Kowalski each added two shots. Matt Marchiori was active tonight in goal for the Spartans as he saved 10 shots in 90 minutes of action.

The Spartans now move to 6-4-4 overall and 2-0-3 in American Rivers Conference action.
