Men's Soccer Fall to Pioneers 1-2

DUBUQUE, Iowa -  The Spartans took Oyen Field tonight as they played host to the Pioneers of UW-Platteville on a beautiful fall night. The Spartans were looking to get off to a good start, but a miscue thwarted their efforts as the Spartans took a header toward their own goalie and it soared over the Spartans keeper for a Pioneer goal to give them an early 1-0 lead on a UD own goal. The Pioneers would then continue to attack as they would add one more goal in the 25th minute to take a 2-0 lead. The score would remain the same as both teams headed into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Spartans looked to get on the board to cut the Pioneer lead, and they would do just that as Emil Windahl would score an unassisted goal in the 59th minute of action to cut the Pioneer lead to 2-1. The second half would become very chippy and aggressive which would lead to two yellow cards by Pioneer players and one Pioneer player would ultimately end up with two yellow cards for the game which resulted in a red card and disqualification from the game. The Pioneers would end up playing the rest of the match shorthanded. The Spartans looked to score to tie the match up a man, but would be unsuccessful as the Pioneers took the win tonight 2-1.

The Spartans were led in shots tonight by Emil Windahl with four shots on goal and Darren Gray would add three. The Spartans ended the night with 17 shotsand added six corner kicks.

The Spartans hit the road this weekend as they travel to Wartburg College on Saturday, September 25 to face the Knights at 7:15 p.m.
