DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer hosted the North Central College Cardinals on Saturday on Oyen Field. The battle of the two unbeaten squads looked like it might end in a 0-0 tie until the Cardinals scored the game's only goal in the second overtime at 103:08.
It was a game which fans witnessed two balanced squads fighting for every loose ball and pushing offensive opportunities only to be stopped by staunch defensive efforts in regulation. A warm afternoon amplified by the artificial turf created stoppages for players during the heat for a quick drink of water. Players began to wear down in the later stages of the second half, but the second overtime provided the best two chances to score for the two squads. A ball bouncing around in front of the Spartans goal provided the game winner off a rebound.
The two teams both finished with 11 shots and five corner kicks in the game, but the Spartans held a slim 4-3 margin in saves.
Gloire Luwara led with five shots and
Eloi Niyibizi finished the afternoon with four shots.
Christoffer Rastock took the loss after stopping four shots from the Cardinals.
UD travels to face Grinnell College on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
