STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team would capture the third game against the host Buena Vista University Beavers on Sunday. UD led 6-1 before a four run rally by BV would make the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh. UD held on for the 6-5 victory.
The Spartans scored six runs on six hits and committed one error. The Beavers scored five runs off eight hits with one error. Both teams were held scoreless through three innings before the Beavers added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Spartans responded with back-to-back walks to begin the inning. A fly out brought up
Lauren Brown who hit the ball deep to left field for a three run RBI homerun for the 3-1 lead. UF would line out to left field and fly out to right field to end the inning.
The sixth inning was another scoreless outing for both teams. UD scored three runs off three hits off the new Beaver pitcher. A fly out and a ground out wasn't the start UD wanted, but a two out rally would begin. Pinch hitter
Brooke Goodman singled down the right field line.
Lauren Brown reached on a fielding error and sent pinch runner Alyssa Gruenberg home for the unearned run. A walk to
Emily Bloomer put two Spartans on base. UD would double steal second and third.
Morgan Turnmire singled to left center and sent two runs across the plate to lead 6-1.
Rachel Trader singled through the left side before a final line out ended the inning.
BV would embark on a late rally for themselves with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk placed a runner on base and a double to center field sent a run home. Another double sent a second run home for the score.The next at bat would homer to right center and scored two runs before ending the game on a ground out with UD winning 6-5.
Lauren Brown went 2-4 with three RBI's to lead the offense.
Morgan Turnmire was 1-4, but ended with two RBI's.
Lexi Schmidt added another win to her career after tossing a complete game with three strikeouts.
The Spartans travel Monday to Lisle, Ill. to face the Benedictine University Eagles at 2:30 p.m. before returning home on Tuesday to face Rockford University in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
