Spartans Men's Soccer Battle to a Tie in a Double Overtime Thriller

DUBUQUE, Iowa - A pre-game meeting with coaches and officials had everyone's eyes on the radar with threats of a thunderstorm approaching on Wednesday night. The University of Dubuque men's soccer team would fall behind 0-1 against the Loras College Duhawks before a late goal would tie the game 1-1 through 90 minutes of a gritty game. Two overtimes with the Spartans unable to capitalize on a handful of scoring chances would end the evening in a tie after 110 minutes.

The Spartans out shot the Duhawks 18-13 on Wednesday night with Mathias Ericsson leading with five with three being on goal. UD's Draek Littler found the back of the net at 82:10 after an assist by Joel Johansson shortly after a foul on Loras. The second half of play was all Spartans after out shooting the Duhawks 11-4. As drops of rain would casually dot the turf the game entered the first overtime. UD carried the momentum into the two overtimes with four shots to the Duhawks two shots.

UD would be the only team called for fouls in overtime (2). Corner kicks would be even after four periods with each team finishing with eight. Eighteen Spartans saw action in the intense battle on the pitch. As the game concluded, off to the south in the distance lightning lit up the night from the approaching storm clouds.

Keeper Brandon White would stop three shots on goal and had many more punch outs to quiet the attacks by the Duhawks. He would be helped from a tough defensive unit who blocked and sent away the ball from the Spartans back line. The nighted ended in a tie in front of very limited crowd of spectators who witnessed an intense well played 110 minutes of quality soccer in the American Rivers Conference.

The Spartans continue their home stand on Saturday, April 10 when the Central College Dutch journey to Oyen Field in Dubuque at 3:30 p.m.
