Luwara's Two Goals Boost Spartans Past Dutch

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team pushed their unbeaten streak to four games in a row with a 2-0 win over Central at rainy Oyen Field on Saturday afternoon.

The cold rain would not slow the attacks for both teams in the first, as the two teams would combine for 18 first half shots. In the 16th minute, the Spartans took advantage of their height in the box. Darren Gray lofted a corner kick into the box where it would find the heads of three different Spartans, with the third one being Glorie Luwara heading it home for the 1-0 lead. Despite six more shots on goal in the half, UD could not manage another goal in the half but their defense withstood the Dutch attack to keep it 1-0 after 45 minutes of play

The back and fourth attacks slowed in the early portion of the second half, that is until 60th minute when Gray sent another perfect pass into the box, this time finding the head of Emil Windahl but Windahl's header would go off the post to keep the UD lead to 1-0. The Spartans would find that elusive second goal in the 81st minute, after a Dutch defender misplayed a Joel Johansson sky-high pass, allowing Luwara to play the ball, make a defender miss and put home his second goal of the game for the dagger.

UD would get off 19 shots for the game, while limiting Central to just nine shots and only two in the second half. Joel Johansson recorded two assists in the win, moving him to the top of the conference assist list with four.

The win gives the Spartans 10 points in conference action, tied for the second most with Luther and one point behind Loras.

Up next, UD travels to Luther on Tuesday, April 13, with a 5 p.m. kickoff.
