DECORAH, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team picked up a crucial conference win on Tuesday night, stunning Luther College in overtime for the 3-2 win.
Tuesday night's American Rivers Conference men's soccer match between UD (4-1-1)Â and Luther (3-1-1) lived up to the hype as both teams entered the night two 10 points in conference play and tied for second place. The Spartans came out guns a blazing with
Lucas Von Braun drilling a shot into the upper, left corner of the net to give UD a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. That lead would quickly move to 2-0, when
Mathias Ericsson found the top-right corner of the net just six minutes later with
Daniel Bacskai's second assist in as many goals. It looked as if that 2-0 score would hold until halftime but the Norse snuck in a goal 90 second before the first half horn.Â
At the 20 minute mark of the second half and 65th minute of the game, Luther's Marcos Vila pulled the Norse back to even, squaring the game up at 2-2. The Norse push continued, getting three corners and three shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation but the Spartans absorbed the late punches and kept the game at tied at 2-2 to send the game into extra time.
It did not take long into overtime to decided a winner when UD was awarded a corner kick in the 93rd minute and took full advantage.
Mathias Ericsson struck a perfect corner kick, which would find
Axel Aaman, who was able to hammer home the game-winner.Â
The Spartans now have 13 points and are right in the thick of the conference title race. They are once again just one point behind the conference leader, Loras Duhawks, who have 14 points, with both teams having two games remaining.
