STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team would collect a sweep of Buena Vista University on Saturday winning game one by a 6-0 margin and winning the nightcap 7-4.
Lexi Schmidt grabbed her 12th win of the season in the opener to tie her for first place for wins in a season, but she now holds the career wins record with 27. She has eight shutouts in her career and is also one shutout from tying the career shutout record of nine. She allowed just five hits and fanned two Beaver batters in her outing.
UD would score six runs off five hits and committed one error.
Callie Dutton put the Spartans on the board in the second inning. A single by
Emily Bloomer to center field and a walk to
Cayla Cavanagh would put two on base for the Spartans.
Callie Dutton stepped up with two outs and would take the first pitch deep to left field for a three run homerun.
The Spartans would add three more runs in the third. UD added a run on a throwing error by the Beaver pitcher. The next at bat, BV would commit a throwing error at third base which allowed two unearned runs to score.
Callie Dutton was the lone Spartan with two hits after she went 2-3 in game one.
In the second contest, UD once again jumped out quickly to a 7-0 lead through 6.5 innings, before the Beavers rallied in the bottom of the seventh to score four runs off five hits. UD scored seven runs off 11 hits and played errorless for the sweep.
UD would finish with five doubles with
Emily Bloomer compiling a pair as she would finish the day 3-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Rachel Trader was 2-3 with an RBI.
Brooke Goodman led with two RBI's after she homered to left field with two outs.
Nicolette Evans captured her sixth victory of the season after allowing eight hits, four runs while striking out two.
The Spartans after having Saturday off for UD's graduation, return to Buena Vista University on Sunday for the final game of the three game league series.
