DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team would out hit the visiting Coe College Kohawks on Saturday, but it was the Kohawks who captured the win 7-3.
The Spartans finished the afternoon with three runs off 11 hits, but committed three errors as Coe scored seven runs off 10 hits and played errorless. The Spartans scored first in the bottom of the first inning when
Deanna Origer doubled down left field and scored
Morgan Turnmire. Coe responded at the top of the second with a homerun to centerfield to knot the game 1-1. UD re-captured the lead when
Emily Bloomer singled to left field and scored
Morgan Turnmire in the bottom of the third. Coe's offense fought back at the top of the fourth tied the game at 2-2 on a single up the middle.
Both teams would stayed knotted at 2-2 through the sixth inning. The top of the seventh inning Coe's bats came alive as they scored five runs off four hits as UD would commit an error and held the lead 7-2. In the bottom of the inning, UD would start with two fly outs to centerfield. A walk to the Spartans
Deanna Origer put a runner on base.
Emily Bloomer singled up the middle to leave two on base.
Lauren Brown just missed one over the fence and she would double to left center, scoring Origer. The Spartans would ground out their final out to end the game trailing 3-7.
The Spartans finished with six doubles in the game.
Cayla Cavanagh went 3-4 with two doubles,
Deanna Origer was 2-3 with two doubles,
Morgan Turnmire (2-4) and
Lauren Brown each had one double.
Lexi Schmidt (11-6) suffered the loss after facing 35 batters and allowing six earned runs off 10 hits.
The Spartans (18-11) play at Loras College on April 29 at 4 p.m. before travelling across the state to face the Buena Vista University Beavers on May 1 in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
