DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team led through one quarter on Wednesday night against Augustana but a big second quarter from the Vikings was too much for the Spartans to overcome in a 12-7 loss.
Augustana put the Spartans in an early 2-0 hole less than seven minutes into the game but the Spartans would not be fazed. After the Vikings controlled the first half of the first quarter, it was UD's turn to control the quarter, beginning with a
Zach Schmitt goal at the 6:29 mark of the first. With 2:28 left in the first,
Ben Farraday pulled the game back to even with a goal off a
Gavin Hughes assist. The strong end of the first quarter continued as
Tanner Weis snuck in a goal with just four seconds remaining in frame to give UD their first lead of the game at 3-2.
UD would push it to four straight unanswered goals when
Will Robinson got in on the scoring frenzy just under four minutes into the second quarter. However, the 4-2 UD lead would quickly evaporate as the Vikings would rattle off seven straight goals over the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third to flip the score to 9-4 in the favor.
Farraday recorded his second goal of the night at the 6:47 mark of the third to pull the Spartans back within four goals but that was as close as UD would get for the remainder of the game.
Zach Schmitt led UD with three points and
Tyler Phipps,
Gavin Hughes and
Ben Farraday would each have two points.
The Spartans are right back at home on Saturday, April 17 at 11:30 a.m. against Illinois Wesleyan
