Softball Sweeps on Friday, Improve to 3-1 Overall

PEORIA, Ill. - The University of Dubuque would sweep Friday's games at the Mount Mary University Collegiate Slugger Series. The Spartans beat the College of St. Scholastica by a score of 7-3 and held Elmhurst scoreless in a 3-0 victory in the afternoon's contest.

UD scored three runs in the first, a run in the second, and in the fourth, and a run in the sixth and seventh innings. The Spartans scored seven runs on nine hits and committed one error. Nicolette Evans earned the three hit victory. She faced 28 batters, struck out three and walked three. UD's defense would leave nine runners left on base for St. Scholastica. Morgan Turnmire went 2-3 with two RBI's. Brooke Goodman was also 2-3 and scored a run. 

The Spartans second game of the day, both teams pitchers kept everyone off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. UD began the sixth with Alyanna Martinez being hit by pitch. She would steal second base and advance to third after Kylee Biedermann reached on a fielder's choice.Biedermann would steal second to put two runners in scoring position. Deanna Origer singled and scored Martinez. An error by left field would allow Biedermann to scamper across home plate as Origer journeyed to third base to put the Spartans up 2-0. Rachel Trader sac flied to center field advancing Origer home to collect an RBI. Morgan Turnmire singled to left center and would make it to second after Callie Dutton grounded out to the shortstop. Lauren Brown popped up to third base for the final out with UD leading 3-0. The top of seventh, the Spartans would allow Elmhurst to load the bases. UD had two outs and walked a batter for the first runner on base. Elmhurst's lead off would single to third base allowing two runners on base. The next at bat UD would hit the batter and loaded up the bases. A deep ball to center field would be caught ending the hopes of Elmhurst and end the game 3-0 in favor of UD.

The Spartans improve to 3-1 overall and will next play at Wartburg College on March 20 in the American Rivers Conference opener in Waverly, Iowa at 1 p.m.
