Spartans Softball Open Season with Split

PEORIA, Ill. - The Uiversity of Dubuque softball team after a week delay opened their 2021 season at the MMU Collegiate Slugger Series at the Slugger Dome. The Spartans would collect a split, losing to UW-Whitewater 3-7 and winning 8-1 over UW-Stevens Point.

UD jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against the Warhawks and held that edge through two innings. UW-Whitewater would score five runs in the third and one run in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 7-1 through six innings. The Spartans added two runs in the seventh, but fell short in the opener. Kayla Breunig (0-1) took the loss after tossing six innings, fanning eight batters while walking just three of the 31 batters faced.

Deanna Origer led the offense with two doubles and ended the game going 2-3 at the plate while teammates Kylee Biedermann and Emily Bloomer each collected one double.UD scored three runs in seven hits and committed four errors. The Spartans stranded eight runners on base.

In game two, UD would again take the opening lead after scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lead off, Kylee Biedermann, homered to right field. Morgan Turnmire homered to left field with two runners on to push the lead to 4-0. Brooke Goodman doubled to center field and scored Callie Dutton. The hot hitting Spartans continued into the second inning. Deanna Origer down 0-2 in the count, went deep to left field to extend UD's lead to 6-0. Later in the inning, Dutton singled to right field and sent Madison Dwight across home plate ending the second 7-0. UW-Stevens Point would double in the third inning to score their lone run of the game. Biedermann would double to right field in the third and scored Alyanna Martinez to push the lead to 8-1. The two squads would stifle each others offense allowing just four runners on base the final three innings of action.

UD scored eight runs in 11 hits and committed just one error. Lexi Schmidt (1-0) earned the win after tossing seven innings and facing 27 batters. She struck out two and did not allow a walk.

The Spartans continue play in the MMU Collegiate Slugger Series on Friday, March 5 at 9:45 a.m. against the College of St. Scholastica before playing Elmhurst University at 1:15 p.m.
