Aaman's Goal Lifts Spartans Past Knights

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team had a 90 minute battle on Tuesday night and came away with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Wartburg College

The Spartans would come out on the attack, taking the game's first six shots but had no luck finding their first goal of the season. Despite no goals, the Spartans had several near chances on first half on crosses, while controlling the ball 59% of the time.

After the first half lacked scoring, the intensity and physicality by both teams was raised in the second half. The Spartans had three straight corner kick opportunities in the 67th minute and the third time was the charm. The third corner kick found Joel Johansson originally but his shot was saved and ended up at the foot of Axel Aaman, who would drill it in from point blank range to give UD the 1-0 advantage.

The Knights would put pressure on the Spartans over the final 23 minutes but the Spartans would not break, holding serve to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Brandon White pitched his 18th career shutout in the Spartan win, hauling in four saves in 90 minutes. He is now three shutouts behind Nick Kasper for the most career shutouts in program history.

UD controlled things for the most part, outshooting Wartburg 13-9 and taking five more corners than the Knights at 8-3.

A-R-C play rolls along on Saturday when the Spartans make the trek to Lincoln, Neb. to take on Nebraska Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m.
