CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Spartans finally played their first game of the 2020-21 school year and despite five turnovers UD would capture the football game over the Coe College Kohawks 17-13. Under cloudy, rainy skies, UD would hold a slim halftime 10-6 lead and their defense would be MVP's of the game after holding the hosts to just five yards rushing on the afternoon.
UD gained 229 yards on the ground and 188 yards through the air to finish with 417 total yards of offense. Quarterback
Jacob Keller was 14-25 for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He would gain another 25 yards in 10 scrambles out of the pocket, his favorite target was
Elliott Pipkin who caught seven for 127 yards, including the longest pass play of the day for 71 yards.
Tiger Geeslin rushed 20 times for 77 ground pounding yards (avg. 3.9 a carry).
Sayvaun Roberts rushed 11 times and raced to 70 yards (6.4 yds a carry).
Players of the game were UD's potent defense which held the Kohawks to a total of 199 yards and 1-3Â in red zone conversion chances. The Spartans defense finished with three sacks, and 11 tackles for losses.
Brogen Stewart led with eight tackles with 1.5 for losses.
Garrett Hertzfeldt collected six tackles,
Marshon Crowder pressured the Kohawks all day and finished with five tackles, including three for losses 13 yards, two sacks for losses of nine yards, and a pass break-up.
Tyler Geiman had five tackles and teammate
Adam Steingraeber would jump on the Kohawk fumble for the lone Spartans fumble recovery. UD dominated time of possession 35:22 to 24:38 and stopped both fourth down attempts by the Kohawks in the red zone.
The Spartans were scheduled to play the Wartburg College Knights on Saturday, April 3, but the game has been postponed. UD's next football game will be on April 10 against the Loras College Duhawks at 1 p.m. in the Rock Bowl.
