INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team played their first official game of the 2021 spring season on Saturday at Simpson, falling to the Storm 2-0.
The two teams spent the first portion of the game feeling each other out, with the first shot of the game not coming until the 16th minute. However, that first shot came from the Storm and was the first goal to put UD in a 1-0 hole early. Neither team would find much offense in the first half, as the Spartans would take just one shot and the Storm three and the score would remain 1-0 through the first 45 minutes.
In the early minutes of the second half and the 50th minute of the game, the Spartans committed a penalty in the box, granting the Storm a penalty kick, one that they would convert on to push their lead to 2-0.
After falling into a 2-0 deficit, the Spartans would start to find some offense, firing off six second half shots but just could not get any of them into the net and would fall 2-0. UD's seven shots matched Simpson's seven shots and UD earned more corners than the Storm but the Spartans were just on the unlucky end Saturday.
Brandon White got the start in the net for UD, recording two saves in 90 minutes.
The Spartans will turn around and host the Wartburg Knights on Tuesday at 7:30.
