Spartans Take Game Three and Series from #14 Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque amd Wartburg Knights softball teams played three of the more entertaining games you will see this weekend and on Sunday the Spartans hung on for an 8-7 win to take two of three from the 14th-ranked Knights.

Game one and two of the series on Saturday were high scoring affairs and that trend would carry over into Sunday. Emily Bloomer would get the scoring started in the second inning for the Spartans, blasting a solo home run to right center. Brooke Goodman would follow that up with a double to center field and would come around to score on a two-out double from Alyanna Martinez for a 2-0 lead. Wartburg would then come up with a two-run second inning of their own to bring things back to even through two innings.

The Spartans took advantage of a Knights miscue in the top of the fourth, scoring on an error by the right fielder to regain the lead at 3-2. In the fifth inning UD would play small ball, recording just two hits but was hit by two pitches and drew two walks to put up a five spot, blowing the score open to 8-2.

With the way both teams were swinging the bats this weekend, the Knights would not go quietly, drilling a three-run home run in the sixth inning to pull within 8-5 heading into the final inning. In the bottom of the seventh it was Wartburg's turn to take advantage of a miscue, scoring two unearned runs. Ultimately the error would not cost the Spartans as they would strand the tying run on second to get the series win.

UD tallied six hits on Sunday, with Alyanna Martinez recording two hits, one walk while driving in two runs. Kylee Biedermann, Morgan Turnmire and Emily Bloomer would each come up with one hit and one RBI of their own.

Lexi Schmidt went the distance for the Spartans in the circle. Scattering seven hits and four earned runs with one strike out.

The Spartans (7-2, 2-1) return home next weekend to host Luther College.
