#17 Ranked Spartans Softball Splits at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa - Wet weather appeared to be the winner this weekend, until the University of Dubuque softball team relocated the home game to Luther College on Sunday after wet field conditions hampered the chances of hosting. The #17-ranked Spartans would capture the opener 11-10 and drop the second by a 2-3 score.

In game one, UD scored 11 runs off 13 hits and committed four errors. Nicolette Evans captured the win with Lex Schmidt earning the save. Two Spartans sent the ball deep for homeruns in the victory. Rachel Trader homered in the first inning, compiling three RBI's in the process. Alyanna Martinez made the most of her first at bat of the game and sent the ball over the fence in the second inning for a solo homerun. UD would score in four out of six innings. Deanna Origer would go 3-3 at the plate, scored four runs and had two RBI's. Morgan Turnmire was also 3-3, scored three runs and had an RBI. Emily Bloomer was 3-4 and finished with a three RBI day in the game. The Norse made the game exciting after opening up the top of the seventh with a double. They moved to within a run of the Spartans after an RBI sac fly to centerfield. The Norse with bases loaded would end the inning on a ground out to shortstop.

The second game would be another battle between the two teams. UD held the lead 2-0 through five innings. The Norse chipped away and added a run in the sixth, tied the game at the top of the seventh with a solo homerun, and scored a run in the eighth inning to take their first lead and eventual game winner. UD score two runs off four hits and committed one error. Luther scored three runs off nine hits and also committed an error.

Lexi Schmidt tossed a complete game and allowed two earned runs after facing 30 batters. Kylee Biedermann rallied back in game two after being held hitless in the first game. She scored both Spartans runs, went 2-4 at the plate, and had the team's only extra base hit with a double. Morgan Turnmire went 2-4 with two RBI's. In the bottom of the eighth, both Biedermann and Turnmire would send the ball deep to right field as UD went three up and three down to end the afternoon with a loss.

The Spartans schedule doesn't slow down for Easter Week. Monday afternoon, the Spartans will play St. Catherine University in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday the Spartans will host the Luther College Norse in the second half of the series with varsity playing at 3 p.m. followed by a junior varsity contest.
