Volleyball Makes Quick Work of Beavers

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque volleyball team completed their 2021 spring conference season with a convincing 3-0 sweep of the Buena Vista Beavers.

The Spartans would come out of the gates a little bit stagnant, falling in a 6-2 hole. UD would quickly find their groove and take the lead in the first at 12-11 and never look back to take the opening set 25-14. UD would use that momentum they built at the end of the first and carried it right over to the second, where they raced out to a 10-2 lead, which they would carry into a 25-18 set win to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Trailing midway through the third set at 15-12, UD would once again find a jolt of energy for a rally and take a 23-18 lead to force a Beaver timeout. The Spartans would drop the point coming out of the timeout but take the next two points to complete the three-game sweep with a 25-19 third set victory.

As a team, the Spartans hit .303, while also dominating on the defensive end to limit the Beavers to a lowly hitting percentage of .065. 

Julie May would lead the Spartans with 14 kills, with Emma Powell pitching in nine and Darby Hawtrey adding eight. UD assisted on 41 of 46 kills, with Kaylynn Murrary recording 27 of those assists.

The Spartans are now 5-4 overall and close the spring season with a 5-3 conference record.
