Softball Splits With #14-ranked Knights

WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball opened American Rivers Conference play on Saturday against the #14-ranked Wartburg College Knights and would split the road doubleheader. UD would lose the first by a 9-10 final score, but scored three runs in the top of the seventh to capture game two by a 10-9 margin.

The two squads compiled for 50 hits on the day with each team scoring 19 runs. The Spartans would score nine runs on 12 hits and committed two errors in game one. In the second UD score 10 runs off 14 hits and committed four errors in the victory.

Kayla Breunig took the loss in the opener after allowing nine earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. A pair of Spartans hit two long balls during the game. Deanna Origer and Morgan Turnmire both hit homeruns. Origer homered to centerfield for two RBI's scoring Kylee Biedermann who reach on an error in the top of the fourth. Turnmire solo homered to left center at the top of the sixth inning with two outs. UD would score two runs at the top of the seventh before ending the game on a strikeout.

In game two, the Spartans were up by a 7-3 margin through four innings. The host Knights would score two runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to take their first lead 9-7. The Spartans responded and scored three runs in the top of the seventh to re-gain the lead 10-9. Wartburg would put two runners on base after two walks and their day would end on a batter's interference call with the Spartans earning a victory 10-9. It was just the Knights second loss of the season.

A quartet of Spartans sent the ball deep in game two. Kylee Biedermann, Deanna Origer, Emily Bloomer, and Cayla Cavanaugh (2). Cavanaugh led with three RBI's after going 2-3 at the plate. Starting pitcher Lexi Schmidt compiled her third win of the season after tossing six innings, allowing just three earned runs while striking out three. Nicollette Evans threw one inning and allowed one earned run.

UD 6-2 overall, 1-1 in A-R-C continues play on Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa in game three of the league series.
