Baseball Swept By #7 Wash U

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team opened their home slate on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against Washington University, who finished 2020's shortened season ranked seventh in the d3baseball.com poll.

Game One
The scoring got underway in the top of the third after a two-out error by the Spartans allowed the Bears to plate the first run. Despite UD starter not giving up much hard contact, WashU was able to find the holes and tacked on two more runs in the top of fourth to make it 3-0. The Bears would blow it open in the fifth with three more runs to make it 6-0, where the score would hold until the eighth when the Bears added one more, leading to the final 7-0 score.

The Spartans were limited to just two hits in game one, both of which were singles from Cole DeStefanis and Max Snowden

Jordan Nelson took the mound in game one for UD, giving up five earned runs over six innings with three strike outs.

Game Two
The scoring in the second game once again began in the top of the third inning with another two out rally for Washington, this time scraping two runs across. The Spartans answered in a big way in the bottom of the fourth as Kellen Mitchell crushed an inside slider for a two-run home run over the right field fence to square things up at 2-2.

Washington would regain the lead in the next half inning and never look back as they would add four more in the sixth and one run in each of the final three innings, meanwhile the Spartans could only find two more hits after the Mitchell home run.

Parker Allen and Max Snowden would add the two other hits to go with Mitchell's home run. UD used five pitchers in relief in game two, combining for 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run.
