MEQUON, Wis. - The University of Dubuque lacrosse team suffered their first defeat of the young season on Saturday afternoon, falling victim to Concordia Wisconsin, 9-7.
A Concordia Wisconsin goal just 90 seconds in made it seem is if the game was headed towards being an offensive shootout but the defense's would settle in. The Spartans got back-to-back goals three minutes apart at 6:55 and 3:51 of the opening quarter, to grab their first lead of the contest. That lead would not last long as the Falcons would score 44 seconds later and then opened the second quarter scoring to vault right back ahead.Â
After trading the next two goals, UD would rattle off two goals in the final two minutes of the second quarter to give the Spartans the momentum and a 5-4 lead at the break.Â
The Spartans came out in the third quarter firing, scoring a goal less than two minutes into the quarter to build their largest lead of the game at 6-4. The UD offense would then go quiet, going scoreless over the next 15 minutes as Concordia Wisconsin would take advantage and move had 7-6 after three quarters. With 10:30 remaining,
Ben Farraday broke UD's scoring drought to even the game up at 7-7. However, that was the final time the Spartans could break the back of the net and the Falcons would score with 7:17 remaining to retake the lead and put in the dagger with 33 seconds remaining.
The Spartans had four players score a goal on Saturday afternoon, with
Zach Schmitt,
Tanner Weis and
Joey Maniaci each scoring two goals. Despite taking nine less shots, the Spartans did have more shots on goal at 23-21. UD's defense also defended extra-man opportunities well, holding the Falcons scoreless on two extra-man attempts,Â
Coming Up: The Spartans come home for their home opener on Wednesday, Mar. 3, hosting Benedictine at 6 p.m. Attendance will follow UD's attendance policy of no general admission.Â
