MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Dubuque Spartan volleyball team went on the road to finish off the regular season with a non-conference match-up with the Cornell College Rams who went undefeated in their conference this season. The Spartans would take the Rams to five sets but would end the regular season with a 3-2 loss.

The Spartans were sluggish at the start in their hitting which would result in the Spartans falling in the opening two sets 18-25 and 20-25 respectively. The Spartans hit much better in the third set at .302 and were able to take the set 25-19 to force a fourth set. The fourth set was also in favor of the Spartans as they would cap off a close 27-25 set victory to even the match at 2-2. The Spartans are not new to five set matches this season but were unable to complete the comeback as they would fall in set five 8-15 to lose the match 3-2.

The Spartans were led by Emma Powell had kills and senior Julie May added 19 and Abby Smith had nine. Kate Messino racked up 50 assists to lead the Spartans. In the match both teams would battle back and forth with 26 tie scores and 10 lead changes.

The Spartans return home for the first round of the A-R-C tournament quarterfinals as the #4 seed when they host the #5 seed Central College Dutch on Tuesday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m.
