Jake Malm will be entering his third season after being promoted to be the head track and field coach in the summer of 2023.
Malm was previously the assistant track & field coach for the Spartans upon his return to the University of Dubuque in June of 2021 after being the head cross country/track and field coach at Saint Mary's University (Minn.), a position he held since October, 2020.
While at the University of Dubuque as the head coach, Malm has had 47 NCAA qualifiers, 34 All-Americans, and one national champion (JoJo Frost - 400 Meter Hurdles in 2024). On the men's side he has been a part of the program's highest men's NCAA Championships team finish in both indoor track and field (10th place in 2025) and outdoor track and field (9th place in 2024). Malm was the 2024 Outdoor Men's Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
Malm coaches the throws at UD from 2013-2025 with a year off from 2020-2021. Over the last two seasons, Malm has had 16 throwers qualify for the NCAA's with 13 All-American finishes. Under his leadership, the Spartans established a presence at the national level leading UD with two national championships in the shot put: Blaze Murfin (2018 - outdoor) and Tanasha Atwater (2017 - outdoor), and one national championship in the weight throw: Kaitlyn Wilder (2022 - indoor). For his efforts with the Spartan field student-athletes he earned four Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolades (two indoor/two outdoor).
The 2018 women's team also posted its highest conference finish (third) and posted a program-best ninth-place showing at the national championships in 2019. UD own's the all-time conference record in men's and women's indoor shot put, men's and women's weight throw, women's outdoor shot put, and men's and women's hammer throw. As a student-athlete, Malm competed in the javelin and was a member of three Big Ten Conference championships as a member of the University of Minnesota track and field team.
He currently holds certifications from USATF (Level 2 Throws), USTFCCCA (Throwing Events, Strength and Conditioning), and the NSCA (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). In 2016, Malm was invited to participate in the USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camp.
Malm is a native of Grand Forks, N.D. and resides in Dubuque, Iowa.
