McDermott joined the Spartans in 2026 as an assistant coach for the men's wrestling team. He was an NJCAA National Champion finishing 36-1 with 21 falls while at Iowa Central Community College in 2019-20 at 285 lbs.. He wrestled at Rutgers University from 2020-23 where he was an NCAA Tournament Qualifier, Big Ten placer; Academic All-Big Ten and ranked in the Top-30 national heavyweight rankings. In 2023-24, Mcdermott wrestled at Oregon State University finishing with a 14-8 record with seven falls. He placed third at Southwest Open, finished fourth at Cliff Keen Invite, and was named an NWCA Scholar Athlete.
The Dubuque native (Wahlert High School) lives in Dubuque.
