DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's soccer team captured its first home win of the season on Wednesday against the St. Scholastica Saints. The Spartans scored four goals to secure a 4-1 victory at Oyen Field.
The Spartans got off to a strong start, scoring just 2:08 into the match.
Luka Tomic opened the scoring following a scramble inside the box. The goal came from a long throw-in by
Elliott Solberg, which was flicked on by
Eddie Papis before Tomic found the back of the net. The Spartans continued to control the game until the Saints equalized in the 13th minute. Less than five minutes later, the Spartans regained the lead. At 17:59,
Jameson Carl received the ball just outside the penalty area and fired a powerful shot into the lower right corner to make it 2–1. Papis earned his second assist of the night. At 27:41, the Spartans extended their lead to 3-1. Carl found the back of the net for the second time on the night after
Andre Elinoff and
Ryan Tapper combined to set up the scoring opportunity, with Tapper providing the final pass.
After halftime, the Spartans continued to control the pace of the game. At 54:54,
Andre Elinoff intercepted a pass from the Saints' goalkeeper and found himself with an open net, calmly finishing the opportunity for his first collegiate goal. With a three-goal advantage, the Spartans focused on maintaining possession and remaining organized defensively. UD held St. Scholastica scoreless for the remainder of the match to secure the 4-1 victory and their first home win of the season.
Leading the way for the Spartans was
Jameson Carl, who scored two goals in the victory.
Andre Elinoff added a goal and an assist, while
Luka Tomic recorded a goal.
Eddie Papis contributed two assists, and
Ryan Tapper added one assist. In goal,
Tyler Jerkins made five saves to help the Spartans secure the 4-1 victory.
