Baseball Falls to Kohawks in Midweek Doubleheader

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team dropped both legs of their doubleheader on Tuesday against Coe College. Despite a strong offensive output, the Spartans lost game one 8-6 and game two 10-6.

Game One

Vic Pico opened game one with a screaming double to left field and later scored on a passed ball, giving the Spartans an early lead. Coe scored a run in the first and second innings before Will Sullivan crushed a single to left center field, scoring Ryan Turner to knot the game at two. Coe plated four runs in the fifth inning, but the Spartans stormed back in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Sullivan and a two-RBI triple from Zavion Ingram. Coe stretched their lead back to three and despite a second RBI triple from Ingram, the Spartans ultimately fell 8-6.

Ingram went 2-4 with two triples and three RBI. Sullivan also went 2-4 with two RBI. Turner was the only other Spartan to collect multiple hits, going 2-5 and scoring once. On the mound, Dominic Pelizza collected the loss after pitching the first four innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while walking two and fanning one. Matthew Risser pitched an inning in relief, allowing one run. Logan White pitched 0.2 innings, allowing two runs but no hits. Angel Reyes finished the game for the Spartans, allowing one hit and no runs across 2.1 innings.

Game Two

Coe took a 5-0 lead after two innings, but Cade Reisner scored the first Spartans run on a groundout from Pico. The Spartans stormed back in the fourth, as Alex Kirman, Ingram, and Tanner Simmons all collected hits. Reisner drove in a run on a hit batter, while Pico walked in a run and Turner forced an error as the Spartans tied the game at five. The Spartans took the lead in the sixth when Pico bunted in a run, but Coe would plate five in the bottom of the sixth to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish, as the Spartans fell 10-6.

Kirman went 2-2 with a hit by pitch and a run. Justin Potts went 2-4 with a double, a run, and a stolen base. Tanner Simmons also collected multiple hits during the contest. Ashr Harris pitched the first 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Colton Karczewski tossed the next 4.1 innings, also allowing five runs. Jaden Marcus pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
