DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team hosted Nebraska Wesleyan University for an A-R-C doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Despite winning game one 8-2, the Spartans fell 13-11 in game two.
Game One
The Spartans started game one hot by plating two two-out runs on walks, knocking the Prairie Wolves' starter out of the game in the first inning. The Spartans tacked on another run when Logan Cadenhead scored on an error, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. The game was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning and resumed on Saturday. The Spartans came out firing on Saturday, scoring two runs in the home sixth inning and holding a Prairiewolves comeback at bay to win game one 8-2.
Justin Potts, Brady Buchmann, and Ryan Turner all tallied multiple hits in the contest. Will Sullivan went 1-2, walking three times. Turner reached base four times, being hit twice by pitches.
Shae Buskohl tossed five innings on Friday but was dominant in his rain-shortened start. Buskohl retired the first 14 hitters he faced and only allowed one hitter to reach in his five innings of work while striking out eight. Dominic Pelizza continued to baffle opposing hitters, throwing the final four innings and striking out eight while allowing two runs and five hits. Neither Buskohl nor Pelizza allowed a free base runner to reach during the contest.
Game Two
Nebraska Wesleyan scored five runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Zavion Ingram cut the lead to two when he launched his first career home run, a three-run blast to left field. Sullivan also found the home bullpen when he skied a ball to left field, cutting the deficit to one. The Prairie Wolves scored seven more runs across two frames, extending their lead to 13-5 in the eighth inning. The Spartans would not go quietly, as they plated six runs of their own but couldn't push the tying run across, falling 13-11.
Sullivan went 4-5 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Ingram also went 4-5 with four RBIs and finished a double shy of the cycle.
Tanner Simmons received the loss after going 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and four earned runs while walking five and striking out three. Ashr Harris tossed a scoreless ninth inning to keep the Spartans close.
