Pitching Twirls Shutout as Baseball Defeats Waynesburg

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Dubuque baseball team routed Waynesburg University on Thursday morning to the tune of 10-0. Five scoreless innings from Zavion Ingram and six runs batted in by Will Sullivan paved the way for the shutout.

The Spartans (2-6) threatened in the first inning with two runners in scoring position, but Sullivan was thrown out by a quarter step on a two-out bunt. Neither team threatened to score until the top of the fourth, when the Spartans had two on and none out, but a well-executed bunt coverage nullified the opportunity and the game remained scoreless. In the fifth, Ashr Harris tripled and Alex Esser doubled to score the first run of the game. Sullivan pulled a two-strike pitch down the line after a hit by pitch from Luke Levesque to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets' (7-4) best chance to score came in the bottom of the fifth, when Ingram hit the leadoff batter. The next batter moved him to second, before Ingram induced a ground ball to Vic Pico, who held the runner at second before firing the ball to first baseman Donald Kennedy. Kennedy cut down the runner attempting to advance to third and Ingram secured five scoreless innings in his first career start. The next few innings were relatively quiet, with each team stranding one runner. In the ninth, the Spartans plated six runs, thanks to an RBI walk by Carter Krug, a bases-clearing double by Sullivan, and an RBI triple from Alex Kirman. Jase Runde closed the game with a scoreless ninth, giving the Spartans a momentum-building 10-0 victory.

Sullivan made the most of his two hits, tallying a double and a home run to the tune of six at bats. Harris remained on a tear on Thursday, notching three hits and scoring twice while stealing one base in his five at bats. Kirman added a double and a triple while walking once and stealing one base. On the mound, Ingram tossed five scoreless frames, allowing one hit and striking out one. Brendan McQuillan threw the next three innings, allowing one hit. Despite only striking out three times, Waynesburg only tallied three hits during the contest.
