STORM LAKE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team split with Buena Vista University on Saturday to win their opening A-R-C series. The Spartans (5-9, 2-1 A-R-C) took the first game 13-1 while the Beavers (4-11, 1-2 A-R-C) took the second game 11-1.
Game One
Will Sullivan started the Spartans' offense with an RBI double in the first inning. The Spartans worked around a couple of jams in the first and third innings to keep the score 1-0 after three. Ryan Turner reached on a two-out bunt single in the fourth to score Vic Pico and extend the lead to 2-0. The Beavers went to their bullpen in the fifth and Josh Rogde welcomed the new arm by launching a missile which cleared the fence in left-center field. The Spartans went on a run after that, with Pico, Zavion Ingram, Turner, Sullivan, and Rogde all tallying RBIs in the frame. The Spartans led 9-0 after the visitor's fifth. The next inning, Pico, Turner, Alex Esser, and Rogde all drove in runs stretching the lead to 13-0. Buena Vista plated one in the seventh and the game ended 13-1 after seven innings.
Rogde led the offensive charge during the first contest, going 3-5 with four RBI and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Turner went 2-4 with four RBI while getting hit twice and stealing three bases. Ingram finished 2-4 with a double, RBI, and a walk while swiping two bags. Pico drove in two runs on a pair of doubles while finishing 2-5 and scoring three times. Sullivan crushed two doubles and finished 2-4 with a walk. Logan Cadenhead also finished with multiple hits, one of which was a double.
On the mound, Tanner Simmons pitched five innings while allowing three hits, walking three, and fanning five and picking up the win. Colton Karczewski tossed a scoreless sixth while Logan White pitched the seventh to close the game.
Game Two
Ashr Harris plated the Spartans' lone run on a fielder's choice in the top of the first inning. The Spartans held a lead until the third inning when a throwing error allowed the Beavers' first run to score. The Spartans stranded three Beavers to keep the game tied. The Beavers plated two more an inning later and held a 3-1 lead through five innings. They would add seven runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to take the second game 11-1.
Turner, Esser, Rogde, Pico, and Ingram all notched hits in the second contest. Ingram stole two bases to lead the Spartans. Sullivan tossed the first 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run while walking two and striking out two. Dominic Pelizza picked up the loss, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two runs in relief.
