DUBUQUE, Iowa  - The University of Dubuque baseball team opened their season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Alma College. The Spartans fell 10-0 in game one and 15-10 in game two.

Game One

Alma struck first in the second inning with an RBI triple and plated four more in the 4th to take a 5-0 lead. The Scots added another run in the 6th but Jaden Marcus recorded his first career strikeout to slam the door on another Scots rally. Alma added four more in the 9th to take a 10-0 victory.

Risser's hit marked his first career NCAA hit.

Game Two

The offensive struggles continued for the Spartans early as free passes haunted the Spartans' arms. In the first four innings, the Spartans walked ten batters with eight coming around to score as Alma built a 13-0 lead after five and a half innings. The Spartans' bats came alive in the bottom of the 6th, as the Spartans capitalized on five free passes to get on the board. Johnathan Snavely registered his first career hit with bases loaded, while Zavion Ingram found the four-hole and Alex Esser tripled to the left-center field gap, slashing the Scots' lead in half. Tanner Simmons added his first career hit in the bottom of the 7th, as an RBI single brought the Spartans within five. Both teams plated two in the eighth, and the game was called for darkness shortly after.

Angel Reyes took the loss for the Spartans, allowing four runs in 1.1 innings. Vic Pico took the mound for his first career appearance and kept the game close before handing the ball to Connor Lyons, who spun 1.2 innings and allowed one run. Pico struck out the first batter he faced, giving him his first career strikeout. Esser knocked two doubles, while Simmons, Snavely, Ingram, and Alex Kirman registered hits in game two.
