Men's Hockey Falls in Road Bout to Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. – The University of Dubuque men's hockey team fell 4-1 to Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Tuesday evening 4-1. The Spartans will return to action after the holiday break.

The Spartans (4-9-0) killed two penalties in the first period and Prestyn Carter made ten saves as the match stayed scoreless through the first period. The Cardinals (6-3-1) scored two goals in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. After another Cardinals goal to extend the lead, Zach Burfoot connected with Nikita Borodaenko and Matt Downie on a power play to cut the deficit to two. The Cardinals added another goal before the horn and the score ended 4-1.

Burfoot scored once on four shots while blocked two Cardinals shots. Borodaenko also took four shots while recording an assist and winning eight face-offs. Nolan Underwood won nine face-offs while Downie blocked two shots and recorded an assist on Burfoot's goal. In goal, Carter made 27 saves in just under 60 minutes of ice time.

The Spartans will take the holiday break and return to action in a road non-conference series against Gustavus Adolphus on January 2-3.
