MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team lost the Cornell Classic to the host Rams by a final score of 62-51. The Spartans were led in scoring by
Grace Brumley and
Christina Simonetti, both finishing with 11 points each.
The Spartans were moving the ball around on the offensive end of the floor in the first quarter, recording assists on five of their six field goals in the quarter. The Spartans shot 50% from the field and were able to build a 17-13 lead after 10 minutes.
After an opening basket by Cornell to start the second quarter, the Spartans went on a 10-0 run to build their biggest lead of the game at 27-15 with 6:47 left in the first half. Over the course of the final 6:19, Cornell would go on a 14-5 run to trim the Spartans lead to 32-29 at the half.
The Spartans only made two shots in the third quarter, but remained tied at 36-all with 1:52 left in the quarter. Cornell ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 42-36 through three. In the fourth the Spartans got to within two points, but six turnovers in the quarter, along with Cornell's late game free throws sealed the game.
Brumley and Simonetti finished with a team-high 11 points each. Brumley recorded eight rebounds while Simonetti along with
Taylor Martin added seven rebounds each.
Avery Green dished out five assists.
The Spartans are now 2-2 overall.
