Box Score DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's soccer team opened up A-R-C conference play on Saturday as they took on the Wartburg College Knights. The game was even for most of the game, however, the Spartans made more plays throughout to score two goals to defeat the Wartburg Knights.
The first goal for the Spartans came in the first half at the 25
th minute mark. After a throw in,
Gavin Wooldridge received the ball in the box and was able to make a great touch pass to
Mario Meier, who found the back of the net for the goal. With the goal, Meier scored his first of the 2024 season. After a Wartburg response in the 37
th minute, the Spartans went to halftime tied 1-1.
In the final 45 minutes of play, the Spartans were held to two shots in the second half, but none was more important than the one in the 58th minute. Albin Laurdisen was in the right place off a deflected pass and used a strong strike of the ball to send the ball speeding to the bottom left side of the goal to give the Spartans a 2-1 advantage. The game went down to the final seconds as Wartburg was looking for the equalizer, but after their final shot hit off the crossbar with mere seconds left, one last clear of the ball gave the Spartans the victory. The Spartans now improve to 4-4-1 on the season and open 1-0-0 in conference play. This is the Spartans fourth win at home this season.
