Baseball Finishes Series Sweep of Lyon with 7-4 Victory

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The University of Dubuque baseball team picked up their first sweep of the season with a 7-4 win over Lyon College. With the win the Spartans have opened up the season 3-0.

In the first inning Colin Husko was able to get on base with a hit by pitch and then Aidan Elfering hit a two-run homerun over the left field fence to take an early 2-0 lead. Lyon would tie the game back up in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI groundout and a single up the middle to score two runs. Lyon would then take their first lead with a run in each of the next two innings to lead 2-4 at the end of four innings.

The Spartans got another homerun out of Maguire Fitzgerald to lead off the top of the fifth inning to cut the Lyon lead to one run. In the top of the sixth inning, the Spartans were able to tie the game off a passed ball. The Spartans would get runs in three consecutive innings by scoring three more runs in the top of the seventh inning off a Daniel Maller single and then a Husko two-run shot that just stayed fair along the right field line to increase the Spartans lead to 7-4. The Spartans got quality pitching out of their bullpen to finish off the game.

Husko and Elfering both ended with two hits that included two RBI's. Along with his great day at the plate, Elfering started the game on the mound and went four innings giving up four runs while striking out six batters. Patrick Rafferty came in for 3.0 innings allowing only three hits and striking out three. Christian Battista got the save in the final two innings facing the final six batters and only allowing a hit.

The Spartans move to 3-0 on the young season.
