Women's Basketball Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short Against Edgewood

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team mounted a fourth quarter comeback on Saturday afternoon, but would fall short against the Edgewood College Eagles 75-70.

The Spartans got out to a quick 4-3 lead, but would not score a basket for nearly four minutes as Edgewood jumped out to 17-6 lead. The Spartans worked their way back to trail by four points after one quarter of play. The Spartans got back to 22-22 with 7:25 left in the second quarter and later trailed by seven with just over a minute left until halftime, but a short 4-0 run for the Spartans to end the half left them trailing 33-30 at the half. 

The Spartans struggled to score in the third quarter, making only one basket in the first 8:35 of the second half and ended up trailing by 15 points at 49-34. After a 5-0 run for the Spartans to end the third quarter, the spark for the Spartans offense ignited making six three pointers in the final quarter and even took two different leads in the final minutes of the game, but the Eagles would hold on for the five point win.

Morgan Hawkins posted an 18 point, 10 rebound double-double in the loss. Samantha McDonald finished her day with 16 points, making a team-high four three pointers. 

As a team, the Spartans made a team-high 12 three pointers with seven of them coming in the fourth quarter alone. The Spartans were really able to capitalize off the 25 Eagle turnovers, turning them into 27 points. 

The Spartans fall to 1-4 on the year.

The Spartans will open conference play on Wednesday, December 4 at 5:30 p.m. when they take on the Luther College Norse inside the Stoltz Sports Center.
