Softball Falls to Stevens Point in Doubleheader

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The University of Dubuque Spartans made their last road trip of the regular season as they faced off against non-conference opponent UW-Stevens Point Pointers. The Spartans were unable to mount a comeback as they lost 5-2 in the first game and then lost 14-5 in the evening game.

In game one both pitchers held the bats at bay as neither team scored a run through two innings. The Pointers grabbed the lead in the third with four hits resulting in four runs. The Spartans responded back in the next inning with an RBI single from Madyson Dwight to cut into the deficit. After the Pointers scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, Kaitlyn Powell drove in the Spartans second run of the game with a two out RBI double in the fifth. Neither team was able to plate any more runs as the Spartans fell 5-2. Paige Manning pitched the entire game as she struck out two through six innings and allowed five runs in the loss.

Entering the evening slate, the Spartans captured their first lead of the game in the second inning. Following back-to-back two out walks from Grace Lagerhausen and Tricia Sporaa, Cayla Cavanagh lined a double into center field platting both runs to take a 2-1 lead. Over the course of the next two innings, the Pointers scored seven runs to retake the lead 8-2. Leading off the top of the fourth, Lagerhausen launched her first career homerun over the left field fence. In the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans surrendered six runs as the Pointers extended their lead. The Spartans continued to battle as they platted two runs in the fifth. Lagerhausen added to her performance at the plate with another RBI by lining a single up the middle. Next up Sporaa bounced into a groundout for an RBI as the Spartans were defeated 14-5 through five innings. For the Spartans Ciaran Rigby earned the loss as she gave up eight runs through three innings. 

Up Next
The Spartans will finish the regular season at home with a crucial doubleheader against Simpson. The Spartans are battling for the sixth seed in the A-R-C Tournament. Currently with a 4-10 record in A-R-C play, the Spartans will need to win both games to secure the sixth seed. The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6.
