CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team rebounded from their game one series loss yesterday by winning the first game of today's doubleheader against the Coe College Kohawks 9-1. The rubber match game would belong to the Kohawks as they used a two-run walkoff homerun to win the game 7-5 and the series.
Game 1
After getting shutout in game one yesterday, the Spartans got on the board quick in the first inning off a Colem DeStefanis single that brought in
Colin Husko to give the Spartans the early advantage. DeStefanis would later tack on another 3 RBI's in the top of the second inning with a double to clear the bases to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.
Brandon Watkins would contribute the next five runs for the Spartans off an error by Coe in the third inning, a monster three-run homerun in the fifth inning, and a RBI double down the left field line in the seventh inning to give the Spartans nine runs on the day. Coe would get their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Four Spartans had two hits each (Husko, DeStefanis, Watkins,
Hunter Hicks). Watkins and DeStefanis led the team with four RBI's each.

Game 2
In the rubber match between the Kohawks and Spartans, Coe would be the first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third to lead 1-0.

The Spartans did manage to get the lead back late in the seventh inning 5-4, but Coe responded in the bottom of the seventh with another run to even it up at 5-5. Heading into the ninth inning, still even at 5-5, the Spartans would be up to bat first, but after a leadoff walk by DeStefanis, the next two at-bats would be a fly out and then a double play to end the Spartans ninth. In the bottom of the inning, Coe would hit a two-run blast over the right field fence to win the game.
