Spartans Softball Lose Battle to Knights

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team dropped pair of American Rivers Conference contests on Tuesday in a back and forth dual to the Wartburg College Knights.The Spartans trailed in game one 0-1 through three innings, but rallied back to capture the lead in the fourth after scoring twice. Wartburg scored three runs in the top of the sixth to once again grab the lead this tiime by a 4-2 margin. UD sliced into the lead in the bottom of the seventh after scoring a run and leaving two runners on base in the 3-4 loss. Game two resembled the opener. Wartburg grabbed a quick 1-0 lead through four innings. UD scored twice in the fifth inning to lead 2-1. The Knights responded by scoring twice at the top of the sixth. Both teams would finish with three up and three down in the seventh, Wartburg taking the victory 3-2.

In game one, UD scored three runs with nine hits, but committed three costly errors. The Knights scored four runs with eight hits and committed one error. Dariann Diorio was 3-3 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of doubles. The top of the order trio would all end the opener with two hits in four at bats. Kaitlyn Powell led off and was 2-4 with a run scored with a double. Bella Allison was 2-4 with an RBI, and Deanna Salerno was 2-4 with a run scored and a double.

Ally Gullette took the loss after tossing six innings allowing three earned runs and eight hits. Jaelyn Blakemore came in for relief in the final inning, faced two batters and forced them in a fly out and a ground out to end the game.

In the second game, UD scored two runs off six hits (all singles), while the Knights scored three runs off seven hits as both teams played errorless. Kaitlyn Powell went 1-2 at the plate and had one RBI. Tricia Sporaa was 1-3 with an RBI. UD left four runners on base and the Knights left six runners on base.

Jaelyn Blakemore took the loss on the mound after throwing a complete game. She faced 30 batters, struck out four, allowed three earned runs and seven hits.

The Spartans continue their season with a non-conference doubleheader against the Augustana College Vikings on April 13 in Rock Island, Ill. at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
