DAVENPORT, Fla. - The University of Dubuque baseball team picked up their seventh straight victory Thursday morning at the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational as they took down the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders by a final score of 11-4.
The Spartans would start the first inning with a
Parker Allen single to center field.
Jake Cekander would walk in the following at-bat which set up
Kyle Radi hitting a single to center field loading the bases. Cole Destefanis singled to first base driving in Allen to go up 1-0.
Colin Husko would then ground out to shortstop to bring in Cekander for the second and final score of the inning to lead 2-0. MSOE would get on the board with a double to left field cutting the lead in half 2-1. The Spartans would then be able to follow up the top of the third inning grabbing three runs from two singles and a wild pitch stretching the Spartans lead to 5-1. MSOE managed a run in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2.
The fourth, fifth, and sixth innings would be quiet as neither teams managed to score. The top of the seventh would be kind to the Spartans as
Hunter Hicks would come to the plate with the bases loaded with one out and would clear the bases off a deep right center triple to increase the Spartans lead 8-2. Hicks would then score off a sacrifice ground out by Colton Pfiefer. The Spartans expanded their lead to 11-3 in the top of the ninth before winning by a final of 11-4.
Cekander was the starting pitcher on the mound earning his first win of the season in five innings giving up six hits, two runs while striking out five.
Noah Zoglman grabbed the save finishing the final four innings allowing four hits and two runs. Zoglman struke out the opposition six times.
The Spartans totaled 11 hits in the victory with four Spartans including the top three in the batting order had two hits. Hicks led the Spartans with three RBI's off his triple.
The Spartans continue their winning streak to seven to be 7-0 overall.
