Cold Shooting Downs Spartans at Coe

Box Score CEDAR RAPDIS, Iowa – (2/8/23) The University of Dubuque women's basketball team traveled to Cedar Rapids for a crucial contest against the Coe College Kohawks. The Spartans entered the game sitting in fourth place in the American Rivers Conference trailing a game behind the Kohawks. A cold shooting night for the Spartans resulted in a 60-40 loss inside Kohawk Arena.

To start the game, the Kohawks scored the first eight points before the Spartans got on the board from a free throw by Tabria Thomas. After a Spartans timeout, the defense ramped up forcing six turnovers which resulted in points on the other end. To close out the first quarter, the Spartans trailed 15-12.

Once again, the Kohawks used an 8-0 run jumping out to a 23-12 lead to start the second. A fastbreak layup from Thomas stopped the run followed by another layup from Morgan Hawkins as the Kohawks still maintained a nine point lead (25-16). The Spartans entered halftime trailing 35-22. Foul trouble plagued the Spartans as three starters had at least two fouls through the second quarter.

In the first three minutes neither team found the bottom of the net. Isabella Tierney scored the first points in the third off a three assisted by Makenzie Knapp. The Kohawks responded with a 7-0 run to stretch the lead out to 17 (42-25). The next two possessions the Spartans rattled off a quick four points thanks to a pair of free throws from Thomas and a layup from Maddie Monge to cut the deficit to 13 (42-29). The Spartans were held scoreless the rest of the quarter as shots were not falling. At the end of the third the Spartans found themselves down 19 (48-29). In the fourth, the Kohawks captured their largest lead of the game at 24 (58-34) with four minutes remaining. The Spartans battled until the last whistle as they fell to the Kohawks 60-40.

Tabria Thomas and Isabella Tierney combined for 27 of the team's 40 points. The Spartans struggled shooting as they shot 22% from the field and only 10% from beyond the arc. Meanwhile the Kohawks shot 43% on the night. Defensively the Spartans forced 25 turnovers which they converted into 20 points.
 
Up Next
The Spartans will return back to the Stoltz Sports Center on Saturday, February 11 for senior day against the Storm of Simpson College. The University of Dubuque will also be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
