Softball Collects Hits in Losses at The Spring Games on Tuesday

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The University softball team were looking for wins on Tuesday at the 2023 The Spring Games. UD lost the opener 1-7 to Eastern University and Milwaukee School of Engineering 6-9. The Spartans were able to string along some hits despite the losses and continue to improve.

The Spartans scored one run off seven hits, but committed three errors in the loss to Eastern. In the second game of the day, UD jumped out to an early lead to Milwaukee School of Engineering 4-2 after the first inning and held the lead through three innings 6-4. MSOE took the lead back after scoring three runs in the forth and two runs in the top of the sixth. UD compiled six runs off 10 hits, but committed three errors in the loss. 

Starting pitcher versus Eastern University (3-0 overall), Ally Gullette threw 5.2 innings and allowed four earned runs with two walks and a strikeout in the loss. Jaelyn Blakemore came in for relief for .1 innings anf forced the batter into a foul out. Paige Manning took the loss over MSOE, allowing five earned runs after facing 23 batters. She tossed four innings,  struck out two and walked one batter. Jaelyn Blakemore threw the final three innings and allowed one earned run, struck out two and had no walks after facing 14 batters.

Seven Spartans earned a hit in the opener. Right fielder Bella Allison (1-4), Deanna Salerno (2B, 1-4), Dariann Diorio (LF, 1-4), Chloe Hild (DP, 1-3), Grace Lagerhausen (SS, 1-3), Ally Gullette (P, 1-1), and Bella Como (3B, 1-3). 

Against MSOE (4-2 overall), seven Spartans grabbed a hit with Dariann Diorio (1-2, scored two runs) homered in the third to right center for the solo RBI. Kaitlyn Powell earned her first start of the season and went 3-4 with two runs scored. Megan Croke finished the afternoon 2-4 with a pair of RBI's for her efforts. Megan Leick was 1-2 with two RBI's. UD left seven runners on base in the loss.

The Spartans (1-7 overall) will enjoy an off day on Wednesday before returning on Thursday when they face Neumann University (1-6 overall) at 9 a.m. (Eastern) and Cabrini University (4-1 overall) at 2 p.m.
